Celebrated natural-history and fishing artist James Prosek will speak at the Hager Auditorium, Museum of the Rockies, on Thursday, January 26.  The Lecture begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a reception and book signing.  There is no charge for admission to these events.  The lecture, entitled “Fly-fishing the 41st Parallel and Other Travels in Search of Native Trout of the World,” will range widely through Prosek’s remarkable adventures in fishing and natural-history painting, and will be of interest to artists, anglers, and nature enthusiasts of all kinds.

Prosek, a Yale graduate, is a curatorial affiliate of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale, and a member of the board of the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies.  An avid sportsman and conservationist, he made his authorial debut at nineteen years of age with the best-selling Trout: an Illustrated History (1996), and followed it with a series of popular and critically acclaimed books for adults and children.

Besides his many books, Prosek has written for The New York Times and National Geographic Magazine.  In 2003, his documentary film on the world of Izaak Walton won a Peabody Award, and in 2004 he and Yvon Chouinard of the Patagonia Clothing Company co-founded a conservation initiative called World Trout.  Prosek is currently working on a book of paintings of Atlantic fishes and a project about naming nature.  For more on his work, see www.jamesprosek.com.

The lecture is the latest in the Montana State University Library’s Trout and Salmonid Lecture Series, part of the library’s initiative to develop a world-class technical and popular collection of published works and other documentary resources, and to foster research in the history, science, and  management of trout and other salmonids.  The collection now includes more than 10,000 individual works, and serves as a research resource for many scholars and others.  For more information on the Trout and Salmonid Collection, see www.lib.montana.edu/trout.
